Bioinformatician Organisation - Kids Cancer Alliance

  • Make an important contribution to the health of children through enabling cancer research
  • Work with Australia’s leading paediatric clinical centres and medical research institutes

Kids Cancer Alliance (KCA) links three clinical centres treating and conducting clinical research for children with cancer (Sydney Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital Westmead and John Hunter Children's Hospital) with the three medical research institutes in NSW performing laboratory research in child cancer (Children's Cancer Institute, Children's Medical Research Institute, and Kids Research Institute). The KCA is currently building a vibrant bioinformatics team to underpin the translational aims of the KCA and to maximise the knowledge gained from basic, preclinical, and clinical research studies focused on improved childhood cancer outcomes.

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified Bioinformatician to join the Kids Cancer Alliance Bioinformatics Team. The position will be based at the Children’s Cancer Institute in Randwick.

The position will require expertise in analysing and managing large and complex datasets generated from a diverse range of sources, including research studies involving sequencing, gene/microRNA expression, methylation and techniques derived from various sources including banked primary tumours, clinical trials, animal studies and a range of publicly available databases. In addition, expertise is required to mine, analyse and interpret data, in particular for the Children’s Cancer Institute’s new personalised medicine program.

Applicants should:

  • hold a relevant higher degree in bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or a - related discipline and demonstrate relevant work experience;
  • demonstrate knowledge, skills and experience in statistical and data analysis;
  • demonstrate abilities and experience in teaching, assisting and mentoring scientists in bioinformatics and biostatistics;
  • demonstrate strong abilities in problem-solving and independent thinking;
  • have strong, general bioinformatics skills in processing large data sets profiled from microarray and NGS;
  • be proficient in R, Perl, Python, or a related scripting language;
  • be proficient in the design, setup, and querying of databases for research data;
  • demonstrate high-level interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and ability to work in a small team with minimal supervision
  • have proven experience in the establishment, development, and maintenance of bioinformatics infrastructure for high throughput sequencing and/or proteomic data, including a high level of familiarity with a broad range of relevant open source software packages, data analysis pipelines, and systems for large scale data management;
  • demonstrate understanding of molecular biology, cell biology, and related disciplines.

The level of the position will be assigned based on qualifications and experience. A competitive remuneration package will be offered accordingly. Additional benefits include the provision of a Public Benevolent Institution salary packaging scheme and participation in an employer-contributed superannuation fund. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae and a statement addressing the selection criteria listed above.
