The Bosch Institute is a major centre for medical research in Sydney, Australia and is the research arm of the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney. It brings together basic and clinical research scientists to tackle major unsolved questions about the human body in health and in illness. The institute is renowned for fostering high quality medical research and training and has developed a number of highly successful core research facilities to provide state-of-the-art technology to aid the highest quality research and innovation as well as major medical discoveries.

The Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (Bio 2) Facility is a new research facility to be established at the Bosch Institute, and the Bio 2 Officer is a newly created part-time position. You will report to the Institute’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director. You will also liaise closely with senior researchers who will provide expert input into the operations of the facility.

The facility is being established to strengthen these components of research in the School of Medical Sciences, the Sydney Medical School, and throughout the University. Your main responsibility will be to assist researchers from throughout the University with statistical and bioinformatics processing of biological data.

In this role you will:

• establish the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Facility in the Bosch Institute
• manage the facility on a day-to-day basis
• assist users on a one-to-one basis
• offer training workshops to groups of users or potential users
• plan the future of the facilities capabilities
• prepare applications to granting bodies for funds to implement new capabilities
• engage in research projects with scientists from the Bosch Institute, when the opportunity is available.

To succeed in securing this role you will have:

• proven experience in the application of statistical methods to biological data and in the application of bioinformatics analyses to microarray and other gene expression data
• proven experience in the mastery of newly developed software packages relevant to biostatistics and bioinformatics; proven experience in the use, theory and application of statistical software; excellent computing skills, including ability to effectively use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as LC/MS software
• experience in the successful conduct of research
• ability to show leadership and interact positively with members of the university community, including academic staff, research students, general staff
• excellent communication and organizational skills with the demonstrated capacity to work independently and as part of a team, and to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
• relevant tertiary qualifications (essential); PhD or equivalent would be desirable

Desirable:

• experience in working in a biological research environment and in managing a research facility including budget management
• experience in preparation of applications to funding bodies and publication of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
• experience in teaching/demonstrating at tertiary level
• knowledge of University of Sydney structure, environment, operations
