Senior Bioinformatician - Australian Genome Research Facility

An exciting opportunity exists for a self-driven individual to join our Brisbane team as a Senior Bioinformatician. Reporting to the Bioinformatics Manager, you will thrive in a busy environment and enjoy a challenging and varied role. Responsible for assisting in the development and promotion of Bioinformatics as a key element of AGRF's service mix, your key accountabilities include:

Develop and maintain client relationships, ensuring customer projects are delivered and supported within contractual terms and conditions. Contribute to client quote requests and direct enquiries. Liaise with internal and external contacts to develop appropriate quotes, contracts and project models for new and ongoing work. Work with external and AGRF investigators to develop, trial and implement new applications and technologies. Work with internal and external contacts to facilitate project design and data analysis. Assist with testing technical advancements and development opportunities for the service. Maintain strong links and networks within the Bioinformatics community and with staff in key research institutions. Promote the growth of services by collaborating with marketing activities and technical sales support, e.g. via involvement in trade events, talks and conference activities. Provide supervision and direction to junior staff. Ideally, you will possess a postgraduate qualification in Bioinformatics or a related discipline, and have postgraduate experience working in genomics/Next Generation Sequencing Bioinformatics. You will possess significant experience in the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data, including RNAseq, ChIPseq, microRNAseq, genome assembly, 16S rRNA microbiome profiling or metagenomics.

You are an exceptional communicator, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels. Customer-focused, you possess highly developed interpersonal skills, with an innate ability to foster productive working relationships with relevant stakeholders. A team player who supports other team members through open ideas and knowledge exchange, you are a self-starter and finisher with a keen eye for detail. You possess strong project management skills and are adept at managing multiple priorities to required timelines.

Professor of Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and/or Medical Genomics Organisation - UNSW

Are you a first-class scholar with a strong and highly respected research record in the area of Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and/or Medical Genomics? If so, we are offering an opportunity to join a School with an international reputation in molecular and cellular biology, including proteomics, genomics, cellular biology, environmental microbiology, biomaterials and chemical ecology.

The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) is part of the Science Faculty at UNSW Australia and is located on our Kensington campus in Sydney. BABS hosts the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics, which has world class facilities for sequencing (including MiSeq, NextSeq, PacBio and access to Illumina X-Ten), microfluidics (including single cell genomics) and microarray analysis. The School hosts the New South Wales Systems Biology Initiative, supported by high-performance computing facilities, including national supercomputers. The School also has access to outstanding proteomics and metabolomics facilities at the UNSW Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility. Additional major facilities at the University provide capacity for biochemical, biophysical and chemical analyses, electron microscopy and animal breeding.

About the role Continuing/Tenured Full time

We are seeking an individual with the vision, experience and capability to take a leadership role in research within the discipline. High-level academic leadership is expected in research, publishing and the attraction of research funding.

The appointment will initially be made at Level E (Professor) with reference to UNSW’s performance-based salary supplementation scheme for Professors, which involves three additional salary steps based on demonstrated performance above and beyond that normally expected of Professorial staff at UNSW.

About you

To be successful in this role you will:

  • have an outstanding research record in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and/or Medical Genomics, including the capacity to develop methods for the analysis of high-throughput systems biology or genomic data;
  • actively carry out research in the fields specified above and publish in influential and high-impact scholarly journals;
  • have proven success in attracting competitive grant funding and/or industry funding;
  • have a demonstrated ability to engage in collaborative research within the specified disciplines, and preferably across disciplines;
  • have an excellent record in teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • contribute actively to the teaching programs of the School.
