Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop for Early Career Researchers, Adelaide

The Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD) is pleased to present its 4th ECR workshop, which will be based on the very successful Bioinfromatics 2012 workshop.  This workshop is an intensive 5 day hands-on training course tutored by international experts, utilising the latest available software for the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Genomics and Metagenomics data.  The course combines seminars and extensive hands-on practicals involving the analysis of a range of model and empirical datasets, focusing on current approaches in field-leading groups.  There will also be a limited opportunity to work on your own dataset with the tutors.  Early registration is essential as seating is limited to 30 places with very strong demand.

Pre-requisites: Delegates must be familiar with UNIX environments and basic command lines, and will require a basic knowledge of the technology and analytical tools of NGS. Material will be of an intermidate level.

Bootcamp Aims

To improve the productivity of bioinformaticians through teaching good programming/software skills/practices.

Target Audience

Bioinformaticians that want to improve their skills and knowledge of good programming/software practices. We may accept applicants from outside this target audience if space permits.

Expected Skills/Experience

You may be from a biological, mathematical or computer science background but should be able to identify as a bioinformatician/computational biologist. As such, you will be expected to have working knowledge of a UNIX/Linux operating system and at least one programming/scripting language in which you would consider yourself competent.

Towards Cell‐to‐Organisms‐level Systems Biology

Systems Biology is a natural extension of molecular biology, and can be defined as “biology after the identification of key genes”. We envision systems-biological research as a multistage process, beginning with the comprehensive identification and quantitative measurement of individual system components and their networked interactions, leading to the ability to control existing systems toward a desired state and to design new systems based on an understanding of structure and underlying principles. When the term Systems Biology was coined and this type of integrative research was advocated beginning around the year 2000, a number of interesting concepts had already been introduced. At that time, few systems-biological approaches were well developed and their application to fundamental biological questions was limited.

Symposium: Driving personalised cancer medicine through next generation sequencing

The  Centre for Personalised Cancer Medicine (CPCM)  at the University of Adelaide is proud to announce a one-day Symposium “Driving personalised cancer medicine through next generation sequencing”.

This event will bring together researchers from around Australia and overseas to discuss advances in sequencing leading to better treatments and outcomes for individuals with cancer.

There will be the opportunity for two oral presentations which will be selected from the submitted abstracts. All other presentations will be posters.
The deadline for abstract submission is Friday 5th July 2013.
