The human genome is the totality of all of the genetic information contained in the DNA in a human cell. The Human Genome Project began as an international research program whose goal was to generate a complete DNA sequence of a representative human genome. The Human Genome Project was launched in the 1980s and was declared essentially complete a decade ago.
