The first post in the pipe

...and what better way to start a blog called "The Pipeline" than with an article about "the pros and cons of pipelining analyses, as well as some tools for achieving this".

The principal virtue of pipelines it seems, is that there is an implied recipe and secondarily an implied captured recipe. Hail Fellow, well met!

The other rallying cry for pipelines is of course moving towards automation and efficiency, which are implied to go hand-in-hand, despite much experience to the contrary. Ultimately, I think I just like the structure and organization that checks the tendency to "free-style" with data manipulations. That and a tendency to put explicit QC checks in place within well conceived automated workflows.
