Five Year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology for Rare Cancers

Applications are invited for the Stafford Fox Centenary Fellowship in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology for Rare Cancers. This postdoctoral research position is funded for five years by a prestigious Walter and Eliza Hall Centenary Fellowship.

The fellowship will be based in the Papenfuss Laboratory at the institute, which undertakes bioinformatics and computational biology research with a strong focus on cancer and evolution. The lab develops and applies novel bioinformatics and computational methods to make sense of cancer genomics data, and has previously published high impact papers on sarcoma, cancer evolution and complex genomic rearrangements.
The role will be part of the new Rare Cancers Program at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research jointly led by Associate Professors Clare Scott and Tony Papenfuss. The program will generate new genomics data from interesting cases of rare cancer in Australia and aims to improve outcomes for rare cancer patients. A rapid autopsy program for rare cancers is also being established, which will generate fascinating data and provide deep insights into progression of rare cancers. The role will involve collaborating closely with the Stafford Fox Centenary Fellow in Genomics of Rare Cancers based in Associate Professor Scott’s lab and may involve bioinformatics methods development, applied bioinformatics analyses, and computational biology approaches. There is ample scope for leadership and contributing to research direction within the program.
Experience, qualifications and skills
Applicants should have a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as bioinformatics, computational biology, mathematics/statistics, computer science, or physics.  A strong interest in biology and a passion for science is essential. Experience in bioinformatics or computational biology, and cancer genomics is essential.

The position requires strong programming skills and expertise in python and R is highly desirable. Familiarity with unix and version control software is highly desirable. Applicants should have outstanding writing and presentation skills.

Salary and benefits
Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.
