Research Associates - Bioinformatics

Two bioinformatics positions are available in the Microbial Genomics Research Group of Dr Nico Petty in the ithree institute at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS)
We are seeking two highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers to join the Microbial Genomics Research Group of Dr Nico Petty in the ithree institute at UTS. We have two positions available in Microbial Bioinformatics:
- Computer Programmer / Systems Administrator
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary team that uses new high-throughput sequencing technologies and bioinformatics to investigate the evolution and spread of clinically important bacterial pathogens and their viruses.
The Computer Programmer/Systems Administrator will develop bioinformatics pipelines and tools for rapid, high throughput processing and analysis of sequencing data, to enable the interrogation and characterisation of relationships between hundreds and thousands of microbial genomes, as well as perform duties as systems administrator. You will be expected to have the following skills/experience:
- Background in computer science, software engineering or bioinformatics
- Proficient at UNIX and Python or Perl
- Experience in bioinformatics
- Ability to rapidly adapt to and adopt new technologies and tools
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will perform bioinformatic investigation of genome evolution and dynamism in enteric bacteria, with a particular focus on the contribution of bacteriophages to the emergence of new bacterial pathogens. This position is suitable for a person with demonstrated experience in bioinformatics and good knowledge of microbiology. Applicants should have:
- PhD in bioinformatics, microbiology, genetics or similar
- Good record of publications in high quality international journals
- Demonstrated experience in bioinformatics and good knowledge of microbiology
- Experience of programming and analysing genome sequencing data is highly desirable
